THE DICKS, THEE MERRY WIDOWS, TEENAGE HARLETS, THE TWOTS
The Eagle Tavern
The Twots were a new(ish) '77 style punk rock band from Oakland that I had been wanting to see for a while but for one reason or another hadn't until now. British expatriate vocalist "Boozy Suzy," who, as the busty "Knockers," is also a member of SF's queer-punk Clown Porn troupe The Drunk Clownz (who, incidentally, booked/promoted this event), lead her bandmates into "Damaged Goods," "Fuckstruck," "Illegal Alien," "Walk Of Shame," and "Oakland Boys" wearing full make-up with her Adam Ant inspired "Oh-way-oh" harmonies and tongue-in-cheek ruttish stage persona adding just the right levity to guitarist Sebastian's jarring chords and drummer "An!m@l"'s frantic beats. As a warm-up for their song "Nicotine" she asked those of us pogoing upfront "Have any of you got a spare cigarette?" Inciting fellow Clownz "Oopsie" and "Gropee" to pelt her with several while giggling "Smoke those ya 'Twot!'" To which she quipped "It's a good thing I said "cigarette" like a proper Yank instead of "fag" or YOU TWO STUPID POOFS would have thrown YOURSELVES." Not bad.

THE TWOTS - August 28, 2005 at John Patrick's in Alameda, CA
It had been a goal of ours - the UGZ Magazine crew - to see THE TWOTS play live in a Bay Area dive for over a year by the time we arrived at John Patrick's last Sunday night. It was the grand reopening for JP's, and so the atmosphere was almost festive for a Sunday night in that old military town turned former old military town. Free food, free music, and women dressed in sheer garbage bags helped to set the tone for what turned out to be one of the best sets we've witnessed in months. THE TWOTS, lead by ex-Brit Boozy Suzy on lead vocals, delivered a jam packed set of convincing covers and first wave punk inspired originals to an audience of happy, horny punks with more than few stiff ones behind them, and one or two ahead I'm sure. Suzy, who is the front woman and focal point for the TWOTS, has surrounded herself with a more than competent band. THE TWOTS' drummer, in particular, could possibly give Dave Mello (SCHLONG, OPIV) a run for his money in terms of entertainment value.
The TWOTS performance on Sunday could best be summed up by the actions of Boozy Suzy's personal manager Spike
(spike LOL), who chased Suzy all over the small stage with a video camera for the duration of THE TWOTS' set. You would have thought that some legendary band like X-RAY SPEX were on stage, and in Spike's mind they may have been, or so to speak. For her part Boozy chose to play to the camera rather than to the audience, and while this would usually strike me as annoying, it tended to add to the feeling that watching THE TWOTS is on some level almost like watching a classic punk band that never was. Boozy Suzy and THE TWOTS, however, are an experience worth having in the here and now.
